Future of theatre ‘in the balance’
THE FUTURE of St. Michael’s Theatre is ‘very much in the balance’ according to its Artistic Director, Tomas Kavanagh.
Speaking about the venue to The Echo this week Mr. Kavanagh said cuts in funding amounting to €50,000 had left the ongoing future of the facility in question.
“The prospect of the theatre closing has led to the theatre board meeting a number of times over the past weeks in an effort to deal in particular with an immediate cash flow problem,” he said.
“Whilst the immediate problem is being managed there is an urgent need for an injection of money and the board has decided to launch a fundraising drive in order to ensure that the theatre remains open,” added Mr. Kavanagh.
The fundraising scheme will be officially launched in the coming weeks and will be comprised of two parts.
The first will be a members’ only draw and the second will see a replica of the theatre front built in the courtyard by Terry Brennan with the ‘bricks’ being sponsored.
Mr. Kavanagh said the theatre Board and staff hope the two initiatives will generate enough income for the theatre to continue to be a centre for entertainment as it has since the 1960’s.
A fundraising group is being put together and anyone who is interested in helping out is asked to contact Mr. Kavanagh on 051-421255.
“There is huge goodwill towards the theatre in the town and district and we hope that people will rally around and help us in our time of need,” he said.
