Beginners Line Dancing Classes

LINE DANCING classes for beginners are taking place in the Albatros Hall, Rosbercon, every Tuesday at 8 p.m. The classes are also held on Thursday nights for beginners (8 p.m.) and advanced (9 p.m.). Classes will be held in the Hillside Bar, Camblin, on Monday at 8.30 p.m. For more information contact 087-9792483.

Special Olympics club

THE NEW Ross Special Olympics Club meets up every Saturday during the school year. The meetings take place in the sports hall of St. Mary’s Secondary School. The sessions begin with a gentle training and warm-up routine which is usually followed by football skills. Basketball skills and Bocce also take place and everything takes place under the watchful eye of coaches who themselves are instructed by Special Olympics Ireland. Each session ends with refreshments in the canteen. The initiative is a great way to make new friends and there is a special bond between all of the participants. Anyone interested in getting involved with the club can go along any Saturday between 2 and 4 p.m.

Set dancing in Augustinian Hall, New Ross

SET DANCING classes are being held in the Augustinian Hall, New Ross, every week. The classes take place every Monday at 7.30 p.m. Beginners are welcome to attend though all levels will be catered for. For more information contact 051-422485.

Old Folks’ Club reopens its doors

THE NEW Ross Old Folks’ Club is encouraging new members to join this year. The club meets every week in the Pastoral Centre, Robert Street. The club is open to all elderly members of the community in New Ross. Participants get to enjoy weekly chats over a cup of tea and light refreshments. Drop-in service at New Ross CDP

NEW ROSS Community Development Project is continuing its weekly drop-in service for people in the town. The service is available three days per week and offers people a space to chat, socialize, access the internet or relax while playing pool. All services at the CDP are free-of-charge. The opening times for the service are: Wednesdays [7.30 to 10 p.m.]; Thursdays [1.30 to 3.30 p.m.] and Fridays [10.30 a.m. to 1.30 p.m.].

Support group holds monthly meetings

THE NEW Ross-based bereavement support group, Compassionate Friends, holds regular meetings in the New Ross area on the first Wednesday of each month. The group is aimed at parents trying to cope with the loss of a child. The organization was established with that specific aim in mind and offers group support, one-to-one support, counselling, housework help and fuel and food vouchers. Old photographs wanted for historical book

A LOCAL schoolteacher is asking people throughout the New Ross area to submit old photographs for a book he is compiling on the town’s folklore. Mr. Sean Crowley, a teacher in Horeswood National School, is looking for photos from the early 1900s [specifically between 1900 and 1950]. All photos submitted will be scanned and then returned to their owners. Among the particular themes Sean is seeking are: Old trades including: Butcher; Blacksmith; Baker; Cooper; Tailor; Shoemaker etc.; Photos of the old mills in the Maudlins; Commemorations; Parades; J.K.L. Commemorations; Fair Day photos; depictions of the Quay and the old trade sailing ships; Breweries and old shops. Sean is also looking for information on Ms. Mary B. Dunphy who was the Principal in St. Leonard’s National School between 1901 and 1938. Ms. Dunphy was originally from the Irishtown. Photos of De Valera’s visit to New Ross in 1932 are also welcome as are any photos of New Ross regattas. “I’m compiling the book to provide people with the opportunity to share their old photos from a bygone era with the wider community,” said Sean. Augustinian Pilgrimage

THIS YEAR’S Augustinian Pilgrimage to the Holy Land will take place between October 25 and November 3. Anyone interested in finding out more about the trip is asked to contact Mary Maddock on 051-421925.

United Striders Athletics Club

TRAINING IS currently taking place on Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings from 7 p.m. and 11 a.m. respectively. The sessions are aimed at athletes from U-8 up to U-18. For more information log onto www.unitedstriders.com

Hairball in Portovino

A VERY special fundraising event will take place in Portovino, New Ross, on Sunday, May 31. The first annual H20 Hairball showcase is being organised to raise money for New Ross Search & Rescue. The brainchild of H2O owner, Niall Bennett, the fundraiser will be held in conjunction with Portovino. The organisers are encouraging everyone to dress ‘outside of the norm’ for the event and to avail of an occasion to “really let their hair down”. We want people to have fun on the night,” said Mr. Bennett. A wide range of spot prizes will be up for grabs on the night including a full hair makeover courtesy of H20. Among the other prizes will be a night for two in a top Dublin hotel in addition to make-up hampers courtesy of Bert Bees. In addition to the main follicle focused events there will also be a dance extravaganza performed on the night courtesy of David O’Connor, Catherine Connaughton and eight local dancers.

Solemn Triduum in St. Augustine’s

THE ANNUAL Solemn Triduum in honour of St. Rita of Cascia will begin in the Augustinian Church, New Ross, on Tuesday, May 19. It will continue at the 10 a.m. Mass on Wednesday and Thursday. The Feast will be celebrated at the 10 a.m. Mass on Friday, May 22 and roses will be blessed at that Mass. Rita lived from 1381 to 1457 and was canonized in 1900. She was married and was the mother of two children. Following the death of her children and the murder of her husband, Rita lived as an Augustinian nun for over 40 years in the convent at Cascia. During the last 15 years of her life she bore the stigmata on her forehead. She is known as the Saint of the Impossible and her sanctuary in Cascia is a place of great pilgrimage.
