Beginners’ line dancing classes
LINE DANCING classes for beginners are taking place in the Albatros Hall, Rosbercon, every Tuesday at 8 p.m.
The classes are also held on Thursdays for beginners (8 p.m.) and advanced (9 p.m.).
Classes will be held in the Hillside Bar, Camblin, on Mondays at 8.30 p.m.

Special Olympics club
THE NEW Ross Special Olympics Club meets up every Saturday during the school year.
The meetings take place in the sports hall of St. Mary’s Secondary School.
The sessions begin with a gentle training and warm-up routine which is usually followed by football skills. Basketball skills and Bocce also take place and everything takes place under the watchful eye of coaches who themselves are instructed by Special Olympics Ireland.
Each session ends with refreshments in the canteen.
The initiative is a great way to make new friends and there is a special bond between all of the participants. Anyone interested in getting involved with the club can go along any Saturday between 2.00 and 4 p.m.
Set dancing in New Ross
SET DANCING classes began recently in the Augustinian Hall, New Ross.
They will continue every Monday at 7.30 p.m.
Beginners are welcome to attend though all levels will be catered for. For more information contact 051422485.
Old Folks’ Club re-opens its doors
THE NEW Ross Old Folks’ Club is welcome new members for the remainder of the year.
The club meets every week in the Pastoral Centre, Robert Street.
The club is open to all elderly members of the community in New Ross. Participants get to enjoy weekly chats over a cup of tea and light refreshments.

Drop-in service at New Ross CDP
NEW ROSS Community Development Project is continuing its weekly drop-in service for people in the town.
The service is available three days per week and offers people a space to chat, socialize, access the internet or relax while playing pool.
All services at the CDP are free-ofcharge. The opening times for the service are: Wednesdays [7.30 to 10 p.m.]; Thursdays [1.30 to 3.30 p.m.] and Fridays [10.30 a.m. to 1.30 p.m.].
Support group holds monthly meetings
THE NEW Ross-based bereavement support group, Compassionate Friends, holds regular meetings in the New Ross area on the first Wednesday of each month.
The group is aimed at parents trying to cope with the loss of a child. The organization was established with that specific aim in mind and offers group support, one-to-one support, counselling, housework help and fuel and food vouchers. The meetings are held in the Brandon House Hotel and take place from 8.00 to 10 p.m.

Old photographs wanted for historical book
A LOCAL schoolteacher is asking people throughout the New Ross area to submit old photographs for a book he is compiling on town’s folklore.
Mr. Sean Crowley spoke to the New Ross Echo about the initiative last week.
In particular he is looking for photos from the early 1900s [specifically between 1900 and 1950].
“All the photos will be scanned and then returned to their owners,” he said. Among the particular themes Sean is seeking are: Old trades including: Butcher; Blacksmith; Baker; Cooper; Tailor; Shoemaker etc.; Photos of the old mills in the Maudlins; Commemorations; Parades; J.K.L. Commemorations; Fair Day photos; depictions of the Quay and the old trade sailing ships; Breweries and old shops.
Sean is also looking for information on Ms. Mary B. Dunphy who was the Principal in St. Leonard’s National School between 1901 and 1938. Ms. Dunphy was originally from the Irishtown.
Photos of De Valera’s visit to New Ross in 1932 are also welcome as are any photos of New Ross regattas.
“I’m compiling the book to provide people with the opportunity to share their old photos from a bygone era with the wider community,” said Sean. Anyone with photos they would like to submit for inclusion can contact Sean directly at: 10 Árd ®Álainn, New Ross.

Choral Concert in St. Mary’s
A VERY special concert will take place in St. Mary’s Church, New Ross, on Thursday, May 7, at 8 p.m. The performance will feature two choirs and two harpists and promises to be one of the music highlights of the year.
The New Ross Singers and Choralis Ladies’ Choir will join forces on the night to sing the Schubert Mass in F along with other choral favourites including Mozart’s ‘Ave Verum’.
The concert is being organised to raise money for the church.
The two choirs will be joined on the night by harpists, Aileen and Áine Kennedy.
While admission to the event will be free, the organisers are hoping that a voluntary retiring collection will raise funds for necessary repair work planned for the church.
Augustinian Pilgrimage
THIS YEAR’S Augustinian Pilgrimage to the Holy Land will take place between October 25 and November 3.

Golf classic for Geraldine’s
THE GERALDINE O’Hanrahan’s G.A.A. Club will be holding a Golf Classic event on Friday, May 8.
The venue will be New Ross Golf Club and the cost of participating for teams of four will be €200.
The admission fee is inclusive of a meal, prizes and evening entertainment. Local businesses can also sponsor a tee-box for €50.

United Striders’ Athletics Club
TRAINING IS currently taking place on Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings from 7 p.m. and 11 a.m. respectively.

Youth club needs disco volunteers
RAHEEN YOUTH Club is currently seeking volunteers to assist at the Presentation Disco on May 1.
A spokesperson for the club told the New Ross Echo that no volunteers have come forward to date to assist on the night.
“We can’t attend the disco unless we have a minimum of five volunteers,” she said.
