Old photographs wanted for historical book

A LOCAL schoolteacher is asking people throughout the New Ross area to submit old photographs for a book he is compiling on the town’s folklore.

Mr. Sean Crowley recently spoke to the New Ross Echo about the initiative.

In particular he is looking for photos from the early 1900s [specifically between 1900 and 1950].

All photos submitted will be scanned and then returned to their owners. Among the particular themes Sean is seeking are: Old trades including: Butcher; Blacksmith; Baker; Cooper; Tailor; Shoemaker etc.; Photos of the old mills in the Maudlins; Commemorations; Parades; J.K.L. Commemorations; Fair Day photos; depictions of the Quay and the old trade sailing ships; Breweries and old shops.

Sean is also looking for information on Ms. Mary B. Dunphy who was the Principal in St. Leonard’s National School between 1901 and 1938.

Photos of De Valera’s visit to New Ross in 1932 are also welcome as are any photos of New Ross regattas.

“I’m compiling the book to provide people with the opportunity to share their old photos from a bygone era with the wider community,” said Sean.

Anyone with photos they would like to submit for inclusion can contact Sean directly at: 10 Ard Alainn, New Ross.
