Dwyer leaves Sinn Féin
SINN FÉIN Councillor, John Dwyer, has made up his mind to leave the party and contemplate a new political direction in New Ross.
While getting re-elected to New Ross Town Council, Cllr. Dwyer failed to win back his seat on Wexford Co. Council.
That loss came as a shock to many people across the county where Cllr. Dwyer would be seen as a hard-working and honest politician.
However, when speaking to the New Ross Echo from Portugal at the weekend, he admitted that party politics had stifled not only his campaign but also his own personal view on the political direction that elected representatives in Co. Wexford should be taking.
In the run-up to the election, Cllr. Dwyer had contemplated leaving Sinn Féin but senior sources within the party as well as constituents pleaded with him to remain in the party ranks.
However, it looks like he has now made his mind up on the matter and confirmed that he will be issuing a formal statement when he returns home from holidays with his family.
In the past Cllr. Dwyer said he would never again run in a general election for Sinn Féin; however, he hinted that running as an independent or possibly in another new political movement might be something he would consider.
“I’m not fully sure yet with regard to that but my position within the party is something I have made up my mind about and I’ll be issuing a statement when I come home,” he said.
