Meet Brenda - Putting the focus back on real fashion for real women
KEEN TO SHOW that they provide fashion for real sized Irish women at purse-friendly prices, Oxendales Style Director, Brenda O’Sullivan, has made her modelling debut as a real woman to show you what she would chose from the new Oxendales collection.
We say no better woman than Brenda to be the nation’s fashion companion! Putting real women in their catalogue and using Brenda and her best friend, Miriam to show how fashion works on real shapes and sizes is a welcome break from companies using sizes 8 + 10 models when the average size is a curvaceous 16.
Brenda, from Dublin, promises to be “someone you can totally trust to help you make the most of your wardrobe and think about your budget too”! “I’ve created my own little capsule collection, using 7 key pieces from the range, that can mix and match to create very different looks, just as an example of the new range versatility and value. I hope it shows you don’t have to go overboard to really revitalise your look. Just think staples, plus print and plain pieces and remember it needs to be versatile enough to take you from work to weekend!”
We all know how stylists rave about the merits of a capsule wardrobe but most women try and try and still bring 3 pairs of shoes and 2 dresses too many! So if you’re a curvy woman, looking for some style direction that works for your shape then why not give Brenda’s capsule wardrobe a try let someone else do the hard work for you!
Brenda says ....
WE LOVE LAYERS Cardi’s are a girl’s best friend. Fact. The one from my capsule collection isn’t a thin flimsy thing either. And, I’ve put it with this fab mosaic dress just to prove comfy doesn’t have to mean slouchy. Yes it works just as well with denim but, cinch your waist with a belt to add definition and it works in a fashionably formal way too. Look out for other cardi’s like it in this season’s range, there’s loads that are just as versatile.
IT’S A SMART MOVE Compare this look to the same dress with the cardi, and you can see how just taking the cami from underneath to reveal a careful amount of cleavage, adding chunky beads, then a tailored jacket, takes the look to a sharp chic solution. One that can easily take you from day into evening. The deep v-heck and under-bust band really helps slim your top half and the ‘A’ line shape is beautifully cut just to skim your hips without getting clingy.
IT’S LIKE MAGIC Winding down your wardrobe for the weekend still takes a little thinking about. To me, it’s trying to achieve a style that’s still ladylike, but looks effortless. I know that’s simple to say, but Miriam demonstrates the point with my capsule cardi on top, worn loosely over the cami and then adding those gorgeous figure smoothing Magi-fit trousers. (They’re called trousers in the book, but they look and feel like smart jeans). They’ve got a front central panel that ‘magically’ trims your tummy, and then the kick-flare shape over heels really adds to your height. They’re probably smart enough for work too if the boss lets you get away with denim!
CHIC & SIMPLE Chic tailoring needn’t look formal. I’ve taken my capsule tunic and got Miriam to tuck it into the trousers to really add a trend accent. (The suit would work just as well with the white cami under, for a more toned down feel). I think the thing is with suits, you’ve got to be brave. You may feel they are outside your normal style comfort zone, but this one’s so silhouette friendly it will work for just about any shape. So don’t back out because you think a trouser suit’s too business-like! This look really fashionable, with just an understated air of formality that’s good for day or night. Oh .... don’t forget the heels!
TAKE A TREND like fashions ‘folky’ look and make it work for you. It’s perfectly practical in loads of way. The tops are usually tunics, so you’re assured of hip and bum cover then adding a low slung belt not only shows off your style credentials, but really helps add shape to your midriff. Finish the look with kick-flares like my magi-fit trousers to add the illusion of inches to your height. This look ticks all the trend boxes, but definitely maintains an air of feminine sophistication. To go a little ‘grungier’, look out for stonewash or vintagewash jeans. You could try a narrower legline too, if you’re lucky enough to have height in the first place!
