Cabaret kick-off for 2010

THE CÁCA Milis Cabaret, Wexford’s monthly hit of music, performance, comedy, film and dance, is kicking off again this year with a new day and time for 2010.

Last year, it was a late-night event, on the last Saturday of each month, but due to the popularity of the show, the Wexford Arts Centre have invited the Cabaret crew to play at the main-event time of Fridays at 8:30p.m., midmonth.

At a modest eight euro admission, less than the price of many cinemas, the show is one of the best regular live events in the South-East. Based on the Brechtian idea of a “people’s cabaret”, proceedings are spontaneous and lively. Last year, established artistes like Kevin McAleer, Eleanor McEvoy, Mick Flannery, Eoin Colfer and Billy Roche did turns alongside some of the best emerging local talent. During 2009, this included an amazing selection of high quality performers mainly from Wexford, Waterford and Carlow.

As part of its “Ciné Sweetcake” section, in July the Cabaret hosted the Wexford premiere of Laura Way’s short film, “Sugar Stick”, and in November, screened Barry McKinley’s “Blood Coloured Moon,” both of which have gone on to win awards at international festivals.

Artists, writers and poets also travel from further afield in Ireland and abroad to perform in the show, like last year’s memorable performance from Congolese musician Niwel Tsumba, or ItalianAmerican jazz Diva Maria Tecce.

Although the line-up is not usually divulged ahead of time, for the 2010 debut show, the Wexford Arts Centre has announced that the special guest on Friday 12 is Italian mime artist Carlo Jaccuci.

Jaccuci’s work is a ferocious and wonderful blend of comedy, farce, mime and song. His specialty is alternative cabaret and clown satire. He has performed all over Europe, having trained in Paris with theatre maestro Philippe Gaulier.

If you have any favourite local performers, chances are that one of them will be there either on Friday or in the year’s upcoming schedule. It’s also a safe bet that you’ll find some of the spectacular ladies of Khelashi Dance at most performances. Further info can be found at the Cáca Milis Cabaret website, http://www.cacamilis.org
