Dinner dance for Geraldines

THE GERALDINE O’Hanrahan G.A.A. Club will be holding its annual dinner dance on Saturday, February 20. The venue will be the Brandon House Hotel.

Entertainment will be provided by the Bottle Brothers.

Those interested in attending are advised to buy tickets beforehand as tickets will not be available on the night.

Digital photography group meeting

THE RAMSGRANGE Digital Photography Group meets every Wednesday at 7 p.m.

The group’s activities include outings, demonstrations and discussions. The members also enjoy ongoing tuition both on a one-to-one and group basis.

Fusion open for business

THE FUSION Youth Cafe is continuing its weekly slot in Ramsgrange.

The opening times at the cafe are 3.30 to 5.30 p.m. [Fridays] and 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesdays.

A local bus service is on offer for Wednesday nights for a fare of €2, however, it must be booked by 1 p.m. on Wednesday.

Musical society welcomes new members

NEW ROSS Musical Society is currently accepting new members to join its chorus cast for the forthcoming production of ‘The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas’.

Rehearsals for the show have already begun in the CBS Secondary School.

New members are always welcome to join the society, however, this year an extra call is being made to people throughout the community who feel they might be interested in getting involved to go along to a rehearsal. For this year’s show men and women aged 18 years and upwards are particularly invited to attend rehearsals.

The show will be staged in St. Michael’s Theatre from March 2 to 6.

Call for photos and information

THE MEN’S Photography Group (Blokes with Cameras) based in South West Wexford Community Development Project (SWWCDP) is currently undertaking a research project to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of SWWCDP.

The Men’s Group is looking for old photos, memorabilia and stories from people who have lived in the area over the last two decades.

The Men’s Group wants to hear how SWWCDP benefited such people or the community of South West Wexford during that time.

Drama workshop hard at work

New Ross Drama Workshop is hard at work preparing for its production of Bernard Farrell’s hilarious comedy, ‘Canaries’.

The play will be staged in St. Michael’s Theatre, New Ross, from Thursday to Saturday, March 12 and 13.

Health Care Course

A HEALTH Care Course is due to take place in the South West Wexford CDP building in Ramsgrange over the coming weeks.

Names are now being taken of people interested in participating on the course.

The course will be titled ‘Introduction to Healthcare Support’.

The aim of the initiative will be to provide an overview of the skills and knowledge needed to work as a healthcare worker either in the home or workplace.

The course will be run for one morning per week between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.

It will be run under the SWWCDPs BTEI Programme and is open to people who are in receipt of a medical card or in receipt of a social welfare payment. Other people may qualify under different criteria.

Badminton classes in St. Mary’s

NEW ROSS Badminton Club is holding coaching sessions in the sports hall of St. Mary’s Secondary School every Wednesday from 7.00 until 9 p.m.

The cost of lessons will be €3 per night while year-long membership costs €40.

Drop-in service at New Ross CDP

NEW ROSS Community Development Project is continuing its weekly drop-in service for people in the town.

The service is available three days per week and offers people a space to chat, socialize, access the internet or relax while playing pool.

All services at the CDP are free-of-charge. The opening times for people to avail of the service are: Wednesdays [7.30 to 10 p.m.]; Thursdays [1.30 to 3.30 p.m.] and Fridays [10.30 a.m. to 1.30 p.m.].

Calendar for sale

THE CURRENT Horeswood Historical calendar is now on sale from local retail outlets.

The calendar was produced by Coiste na nÓg.

Proceeds from the calendar will go towards the underage G.A.A. in the community.

Calendars can be purchased in shops throughout Campile.

Special Olympics club

THE NEW Ross Special Olympics Club meets up every Saturday during the school year.

The meetings take place in the sports hall of St. Mary’s Secondary School.

The sessions begin with a gentle training and warm-up routine which is usually followed by football skills. Basketball skills and Bocce also take place and everything takes place under the watchful eye of coaches who themselves are instructed by Special Olympics Ireland.

Each session ends with refreshments in the canteen.

The initiative is a great way to make new friends and there is a special bond between all of the participants.

Anyone interested in getting involved with the club can go along any Saturday between 2.00 and 4 p.m.

Coffee morning

A FUNDRAISING coffee morning will take place at Betty and Francis White’s, the Ballagh, Adamstown, on Saturday, February 20, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

All money raised will go towards the WONS Orphanage, Lusaka, Zambia.

The orphanage is an Irish-run initiative with strong connections to Wexford.

Tea, coffee, cakes, biscuits and a range of other home-baked produce will be available.

A DVD showing footage of the orphanage will also be shown to those in attendance in the morning.

United Striders Athletics Club

TRAINING IS currently taking place on Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings from 7 p.m. and 11 a.m. respectively.

The sessions are aimed at athletes from U -8 up to U 18.

Free counselling service in Ramsgrange

A FREE counselling service is now available throughout the Ramsgrange and south Wexford areas.

The initiative is aimed at people who are feeling lonely or anxious or who may feel depressed or have low self-esteem. Anyone wishing to avail of the service can talk, in confidence, to Catherine Power on 051-389418.

Old Folks’ Club welcomes new members

THE NEW Ross Old Folks’ Club is encouraging new members to join.

The club meets every week in the Pastoral Centre, Robert Street. The club is open to all elderly members of the community in New Ross. Participants get to enjoy weekly chats over a cup of tea and light refreshments.

Mentoring volunteers needed in New Ross

THE Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children is seeking volunteers to help with a mentoring service in New Ross.

New community library service

THE SOUTH West Wexford Community Development Project in Ramsgrange has set up a small community library.

People throughout the area are invited to bring along old books in addition to picking up something new to read. The library is located in the CDPs reception area.

Support group holds monthly meetings

THE NEW Ross-based bereavement support group, Compassionate Friends, holds regular meetings in the New Ross area on the first Wednesday of each month.

The group is aimed at parents trying to cope with the loss of a child. The organization was established with that specific aim in mind and offers group support, one-to-one support, counselling, housework help and fuel and food vouchers.

The meetings are held in the Brandon House Hotel and take place from 8 to 10 p.m.

Charity CD available in New Ross

A CHARITY CD aimed at raising awareness of mental health issues is currently on sale in New Ross. ‘A Year in the Telling’ was recorded by local musicians under the banner, ‘A Loose Affiliation’.

The Chairperson of New Ross Town Council, Cllr. Victor Furness spoke at the launch and underlined the important role played by organizations involved in promoting mental health awareness.

The CD is available from New Ross CDP or in various shops throughout the town.
