Concern is growing for missing teacher

AS THE New Ross Echo went to press yesterday, a search was ongoing in New Ross for a 26-year-old national school teacher who has been missing for a week.

Seamus Flahive (26), who is originally from Annascaul on the Dingle Peninsula in Co. Kerry, is a teacher in Ballyfad National School.

He has been employed in the north Wexford school since September 2008.

Mr. Flahive lives in Gorey and was last seen in the town on Tuesday.

It is believed that in the past couple of weeks he moved out of an apartment he was living in and moved into a hotel in the town.

Mr. Flahive, who is described as politelyspoken with a soft Kerry accent, has not been seen since early on the evening of Tuesday, March 2.

His blue Nissan Almera (99LK-4401) was found on the quay side in New Ross Insp. Mick Walsh confirmed to the New Ross Echo that the car was found on Saturday morning, March 6.

Insp. Walsh said the Gardaí “We are asking local landowners who have land running down to the Barrow and Nore rivers to search along the riverbanks,” he said.

Insp. Walsh also asked local people out walking by the river to be extra vigilant and to contact the Gardaí in New Ross immediately if they see any sign of the missing man.

New Ross Search and Rescue:

Members of New Ross Search and Rescue have been heavily involved in the search for Mr. Flahive since he was reported missing.

Cllr. Victor Furness, in his role with NRSR, highlighted the nature of the search to date. He said four boats had combed the river Barrow over the last number of days.

The crews were working in tandem with land searches involving over 200 members of the civil defence.

Cllr. Furness also pointed out that people were still hopeful of finding Mr. Flahive alive.

“Though there has been no sign of Mr. Flahive we are still living in hope that he will be found,” he said. He also asked local people out walking to keep an eye out and to contact the authorities if they see any sign of Mr. Flahive:

“There is a concentrated search of the river going on but he could be somewhere else and we are still hopeful he will be found.” It’s believed that the missing teacher’s car was unlocked when it was located on the New Ross quay-front at the weekend.

Facebook:

Facebook groups and message boards have been set up to help coordinate searches that have taken place in Cork and Limerick in addition to the Garda searches in Wexford.

Mr. Flahive trained as a primary school teacher in Mary Immaculate College in Limerick and as a result searches are ongoing in that area.

Mr. Flahive is described as being approximately six feet tall, weighs between 85 and 90kgs and has dark hair.

However, he may also have his head shaved. When last seen Mr. Flahive was wearing a white zip-up top, white trainers and dark blue jeans.

Friends of the missing teacher posting on the internet described him as: “one of the nicest people you could ever meet,” “one of the most genuine people I know,” and “he genuinely is a lovely fella.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact New Ross Gardaí on 051421204.
