Cork Songwriting legend to perform in Wexford
By Brendan Keane
ONE of Ireland’s most successful songwriters will be performing live in Wexford on March 13.
Jimmy McCarthy will present his ‘Ride On in song and story’ show in Wexford Opera House.
Famous for songs like ‘No Frontiers’, Missing You’, ‘Katie’, ‘The Sky Road’ and ‘Bright Blue Rose’, as well as the world famous ‘Ride On’, McCarthy is without doubt one of the most prolific songwriters the country has ever produced.
The Wexford date is one of three significant shows he will be performing in Ireland this year.
While every singer/songwriter aims for success in their own right, it’s a huge testament to their ability when an established act interprets a song by an aspiring writer.
In that regard Jimmy McCarthy’s name stands proudly over most songwriters living in Ireland today, as his songs have been covered by a veritable who’s who within the popular music world.
Composing since the late 1970s, his songs have been recorded by people like Christy Moore, (‘Ride On’, ‘Missing You’, ‘The Contender’), Westlife (‘Angels’ Wings’), The Corrs, The Celtic Tenors, Tommy Fleming, Paddy Reilly, Frances Black, Moving Hearts, Sean Keane, The Furey Brothers and many more.
Mary Black has recorded many of Jimmy’s songs, most notably ‘Katie’, ‘No Frontiers’ and ‘As I leave Behind Neidin’ while Mary Coughlan recorded ‘Ancient Rain’ and ‘Ride On’.
A one-time apprentice at a racing stable, Jimmy MacCarthy is best known as a songwriter, however, he has also released three albums of his own: ‘The Song of the Singing Horseman’, ‘The Dreamer’ and ‘The Moment’.
‘The Song of the Singing Horseman’, his debut was described as having ‘a masterly blend of pop melodies, trad fiddles, Spanish guitars, country & western rhythms and chamber music strings’.
In 1998, Jimmy MacCarthy released an album in collaboration with Tommy Fleming, Frances Black, Mary Black, Christy Moore, Maura O’Connell and Mary Coughlan.
It was called ‘Warmer For The Spark: the songs of Jimmy McCarthy Volume One’. Jimmy McCarthy wrote every song on this album and sang two of them.
A proud Corkman, McCarthy was honoured in April 2008 to be awarded the ‘Freedom of Macroom’ as a mark of respect to his songwriting success.
He is only the third person in the town’s history to be awarded such an honour.
The concert in Wexford promises to be a rare opportunity to witness one of the great songwriters of our time showcasing his wonderful talent.
